STAR REGISTRATION

Basic & Enhanced STAR (School Taxes Only)

Due to the recent changes in the STAR program, an exemption is no longer available to persons whose annual income is over $250,000.00 OR who purchased their properties or made an initial application for STAR after May 1, 2015. Instead, the state of New York will issue a check to those property owners who register directly with them. The amount of the benefit will be the same as the exemption.  The guidelines for the STAR check are the same.

For the Basic STAR

  • The property must be your primary residence
  • Your Income must be less than $500,000.00
  • You may not be receiving a STAR on another property nor receive a residency tax benefit in another state, such as the Florida Homestead exemption.

For the Enhanced STAR

  • The property must be your primary residence
  • All owners must meet age and income requirements as well

If you register by July 1st, the State says you will reveive a check in the fall.

If you were in the program prior to May 1, 2015 and you annual income is less than $250,000.00, you will continue to receive the exemption and reduction on your school tax bill. If your income is over $250,000.00 you will no longer receive the reduction as an exemption, but will be enrolled in the check program instead. If the State needs further information, they will contact you directly. As in previous years, Basic STAR recipients do not need to renew annually. Enhanced STAR recipients in the program prior to May 1, 2015 will need to sign up for the IVP (Income Verification Program) and the State will verify your income and let you know if you qualify or not.
