On June 17, 2017, the City of Peekskill will hold a dedication ceremony to recognize the significant role that French and American troops played in achieving U.S. Independence. This event coincides with the Statewide "Path Through History" Weekend as publicized on the "I Love New York" website. This event will take place at 1 pm at the Downtown Gazebo at the corner of North Division Street and Park Street with a reception to follow at the Peekskill Museum (124 Union Avenue). Mayor Frank Catalina will welcome all to the event followed by the keynote address from Colonel Jim Johnson, Military Historian of the Hudson River Valley, with reflections on Peekskill's perspective given by City Historian Frank Goderre.
Peekskill was honored as one of fifteen sites in New York State to receive these "Path to Victory" plaques from the National Park Service. These plaques commemorate and celebrate Peekskill's role in the historic march of the French and American Continental troops on their way to and from the successful siege of Yorktown, Virginia in 1781 and 1782.
