The Corporation Counsel is the head of the Department of Law. He or she is assisted by the Assistant Corporation Counsel. The Corporation Counsel is the legal adviser to the Mayor, the Common Council, the City Manager, and all other Officers, Boards and Departments of the City.

The Corporation Counsel and Assistant Corporation Counsel are responsible to advise the Mayor, the Common Council, the City Manager, and all other Officers, Boards and Departments of the City. In addition the Corporation Counsel is responsible to prepare legislation, draft and review contracts, draft and review policy statements, draft and review administrative regulations, act as City Prosecutor for local code violations and to otherwise attend to all of the law business of the City and to discharge such other duties as may be prescribed by law or ordinance of the Common Council.
